Mike Blunden leads Bulldogs with two goals, one assist

MONTREAL, QUEBEC – Led by a three-point night from forward Mike Blunden and another rock-solid performance by goaltender Dustin Tokarski, the Hamilton Bulldogs (8-7-0-3) dropped the Syracuse Crunch (9-5-1-1) 4-1 Friday night at Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec.

Hamilton forward Mike Blunden put the Bulldogs ahead 1-0 with his fourth goal of the season at 15:55 of the first period after one-timing a Gabriel Dumont pass from across the ice at the hash marks. Defenceman Jarred Tinordi drew a second assist on the play.

At the 11-minute mark of the second period, Hamilton defenceman Morgan Ellis stepped into a backhand pass from forward Martin St. Pierre just inside the blueline and one-timed his first goal of the season past Syracuse goaltender Cedrick Desjardins. Forward Erik Nystrom earned the second assist on the play.

Just 2:06 later, the Blunden – Dumont – Justin Courtnall line struck again, this time with Courtnall forcing a turnover deep in the Syracuse zone, then Blunden flipped the puck to Dumont for his first goal of the season to make it a 3-0 game.

With a number of bodies scrambling in front of the Bulldogs net, Syracuse defenceman J.P. Cote squeaked a puck past Tokarski to ruin Hamilton’s shutout bid. Forwards Tanner Richard and Philippe Paradis earned assists.

Late in the game with Desjardins on the Syracuse bench for an extra attacker, Blunden chipped a puck into the empty net with one minute to play for his second goal of the night to seal the 4-1 victory for Hamilton. Ellis had the only assist on the goal.

Tokarski made 25 saves on 26 shots in the Bulldogs net in the win. Cedrick Desjardins started for the Crunch, making 23 saves on 26 shots in the loss.

Both teams went 0-for-3 on the power play.
