Hamilton allows four goals in 1:13 span in defeat

HAMILTON, ONTARIO – A flurry of four Grand Rapids Griffins goals in a 1:13 span in the second period was the undoing of the Hamilton Bulldogs Friday night as the ‘Dogs (5-4-0-3) fell to the Griffins (9-2-1-1) 6-1 at Copps Coliseum.

Griffins forward Cory Emmerton opened the scoring at 8:05 of the first period, with assists to defenceman Alexey Marchenko and forward Jeff Hoggan.

Grand Rapids forward Calle Jarnkrok extended the lead to 2-0 on the power play at 11:03 of the opening frame, with assists credited to forwards Gustav Nyquist and Tomas Jurco.

The second-period goal flurry started with Griffins forward Andrej Nestrasil making it 3-0 at 10:52, with forward Riley Sheahan recording the assist. Just 23 seconds later, Jarnkrok notched his second of the night to make it 4-0, again assisted by Nyquist and Jurco. Ten seconds after that, Grand Rapids forward Mitch Callahan scored to make it 5-0, with assists to Nestrasil and forward Triston Grant. Then, 40 seconds after that, with Bulldogs starting goaltender Robert Mayer out of the game and Dustin Tokarski in the Hamilton net in relief, Griffins forward Teemu Pulkkinen made it 6-0, with defenceman Ryan Sproul earning the assist.

With 55 seconds to play in a mostly quiet third period, Bulldogs forward Sven Andrighetto broke the Griffins’ shutout bid with a power play goal, assisted by forward Maxime Macenauer and defenceman Greg Pateryn.

Mayer made nine saves on 14 shots for the Bulldogs and was credited with the loss, while Tokarski made seven saves on eight shots in relief. Petr Mrazek made 30 saves on 31 shots for the Griffins in the win.
