Late third-period push not enough to earn a fourth consecutive win

HAMILTON, ONTARIO – The Hamilton Bulldogs scored twice in the final 2:06 of regulation in another late comeback attempt, but this time it wasn’t enough as the Toronto Marlies (5-3-0-0) held on to defeat the Bulldogs (4-2-0-2) 3-2 on Sunday afternoon at Copps Coliseum. Toronto remains the only team to defeat Hamilton in regulation this season.

Marlies forward Jerred Smithson notched his first goal as a Marlie to open the scoring just 24 seconds into the game, with assists from defenceman Stuart Percy and forward David Broll.

Toronto forward Greg McKegg extended the lead to 2-0 at 8:51 of the first on the power play, with assists from forwards Spencer Abbott and Josh Leivo.

After a scoreless second period, Bulldogs forward Nick Tarnasky notched his team-leading fifth of the season on the power play at 17:54 of the third period to narrow the gap to 2-1, with assists to defencemen Joel Chouinard and Greg Pateryn.

With the Hamilton net empty, Toronto forward Jerry D’Amigo potted an unassisted empty-netter in what proved to be the game-winning goal.

In a dying moments effort, Pateryn scored with 17 seconds to play to make it a 3-2 game, with assists from forwards Martin St. Pierre and Sven Andrighetto, but from there the Marlies held on for the win.

Robert Mayer got the start in goal for the Bulldogs, making 23 saves on 25 shots in the loss. Drew MacIntyre made 20 saves on 22 shots for the Marlies in the win.

The Bulldogs went 1-for-6 on the power play, while the Marlies went 1-for-7.
